We are manufacturing a antenna spring made of music wire per astm a228. The customer is asking for a coating to be placed over the material. The spring will be used on a clock and will only be used in doors. Does any one have any ideas of a plating or coating to use? I have attached a drawing of the spring in question

Thanks in advance

Why does the customer want a coating? Corrosion resistance? Apearance? Other? That will have a large influence on the coating selection.

If it can be a metallic coating, how about coated wire before spring making? Several suppliers provide zinc coated wire, and Bekaert makes Benzinal (Zn + Al) and Benzalplast (Zn + Al + PET plastic). Or, you could coat the finished springs with a coating like Magni 565 or one of the Doerken Delta series coatings. Colors are available with some of these also.

CoryPad provided some good options for coatings, especially for good corrosion resistance combined with appearance. A low-cost option that is not as attractive as conventional coatings but may be sufficient is Aqua TRC from JN Machinery/Toyo Ink. Talk to your spring vendor about what options they have in-house, outsource, etc.

Just dip it in dykem and be done with it. That will be the cheapest option for you....
