Anti-chafe material for cable protection

What is a good material for protecting hard cables that touch against a sharp metal edge.
This is for gearshift cables and must be applied to the metal surface due to assembly issues.

I have seen silicone rubber extrusions would these be suitable.

could the cable used be the kind in a sleave?
this would eliminate the motion of the cable and leave only vibration as a possible long term failure due to contact.

What's wrong with a rubber gromet. These are used extensivly to protect cables and to seal the panel the cable passes through

Why use silicone? There's no need for it unless you are so close to the engine or exhaust, that temperatures above 200-220°F are expected, and it's a very expensive material.
Many cable grommets are made of polyurethane foams or elastomers and are very resistant to cutting from sharp metal edges. I would go for this solution.

If there is danger of forming a kink in the cable due to contact with the sharp edge then the cable inner will fail by fatigue. We have experienced such failures in clutch release cables and speedo cables in the past with consequent part breakdown.
