Was the field weld symbol in the past a circle that was filled in solid?
Resembling the all around weld circle in todays detailing.
I know the flag is the designator for field weld now and the circle is for an all around weld.

I take offence at the use of the word "antique". Just "old" is fine.

We had to get away from that symbol because you couldn't recognize it from the cigarette burns on the drawings.

Ah.... the good old days.
I never had to use the symbol but new about it from the American Bridge Detailers we had. The EIT I have here did not believe me and I could not find it referenced anywhere. I started Engineering/Detailing in 1982 and I used to smoke at my 4 foot x 12 foot drafting table that was from Sargent Lundy in Chicago. Now I have a computer monitor.... times have changed!

Just came across this. Page 4-33 of the AISC detailing manual 3rd edition indicates that AWS adopted the flag symbol in 1976.
