An overseas customer specifies galvanized fasteners in the natural gas piping and equipment we are providing.

They also require use of some kind of anti-seize on those fasteners.
We'll be quizzing humans at Permatex and Henkel about this.

In the mean time I'd sure appreciate hearing the real life experiences from you folks.

thanks,

No galv on the side in contact with the gas, right?
That results in a lot of crap in the system and messing up valves and regulators.
We used to use a Henkel product, but I don't recall the number.

Hi Ed,

The immediate question is regarding hardware, presumably exterior in flanges, hangers etc.

Not sure about the piping itself.

I have not looked at ASME BPVC for rules about piping suitable for Natural Gas.

I'm thinking for a decade or more galvanized steel pipe has been acceptable for natural gas.
"A53 seamless pipe must be coated inside and out via the hot-dip process. "

Seems to me that you are over-thinking this.

Henkel, Permatex and many others make a flavor of anti-seize that is zinc dust in petrolatum.

Compatibility of zinc with zinc seems a no-brainer.

What is the goal of using anti-seize? Many misapply anti-seize to prevent corrosion when it's real purpose is to prevent galling. I have found silicone and PTFE pastes far superior at preventing seized fasteners than anti-seize.

An overseas customer ( approximately 6000 miles yonder) specifies use of some kind of anti-seize on the galvanized fasteners they insist be used on some galvanized piping for natural gas.

The folks here actually having to deal with this will be contacting Henkel.

1 - The customer's corrosion concerns were justified.

2 - Henkel apparently offered a standard product. I asked, but never heard what that product was.
I just sent myself an e-mail to ask again.

thanks all,
