Anyone familiar with installing gas turbines in the open - ie no roof, no acoustic enclosures?

What are your concerns about installing gas turbines outdoors without protection other than from the obvious issues?

I can tell you that acoustical enclosures are unnecessary as long as the noise will not pose a problem for anyone or anything in the environment.(Gas turbines are extremely noisy)However a weather-proof enclosure would be extremely beneficial for many reasons.

I can also tell you that weather and the operating environment of an open air engine will greatly increase maintenance costs and reduce the reliability of the engines.

Also if you are planning on installing any type of large frame gas turbine, operating issues and warranty claims will be your prime concern. Today's large frame engines require specifically designed insulation, heating and cooling schemes to maintain operating tolerances which, if not closely monitored, will tear an engine up in a matter of minutes. Rain, direct sunlight, and extremely cold environments will greatly affect performance not to mention the instrumentation and electrical issues.

I can also tell you that I have met customers of large frame engines that have lived to regret the fact that they balked at the cost of a weather-proof enclosure. I will also add that as a Technical Director I hated working on open air engines.

To attract attention, I have posed my intial question in a general manner. The real question is to do with the acoustic enclosures of the ancillary bases of large frame machines? Are there any installations where the ancillary bases are provided with NO acoustic enclosure? If so whether those installations are indoors or outdoors?

referring to ge fr 3 & 5 units, yes.

installed throughout nm and az and indoors.

surprisingly, when entering a fr 5 unit bldg, i could not noticeably hear the unit operating.

i suspect that you may be referring to larger gt units.

considering pmover's posting...
i've seen it in all colors and flavors...
on an offshore platform a Fr 5-2shaft driving a load compressor the unit did not have any enclosure, neither did the auxiliaries.
the installation was kind of outdoor (no side walls on the platform) but with an overhead roof for weather protection (rain). and to provide shadow for the UV fire detectors required by the safety stds.

in another installation... they had an Off-base enclosure (the enclosure was much bigger than the unit base) providing walking space all around the unit.

one of the main reasons for the enclosures is not noise abatement, if the OEM/A&E is responsible for the fire protection system too... the enclosures are there to provide the CO2 concentration required by the relevant NFPA Stds.
