Anyone have experience in a reputable toner chip resetter? I've come across lots of firmware guys, but not clear whether they're scams or legit. I like the idea of getting the programmer for the chips themselves, but the cost seems to be in the hundreds of dollars, which would be OK if I were going to make that my sideline, but not for a single practitioner office with two printers.

I don't have any hands-on experience, but I've read that at least some of the 'reset' devices simply fried the chip. This worked because the printer's firmware was programmed to generously assume a random chip failure. Inevitably it then becomes a war zone, with subsequent printer firmware updates becoming less generous.

Best approach is to never buy a printer (or anything!) with anti-consumer DRM embedded in the consumables. Many printers use simple ink (edit: or toner) tanks, without DRM chips. Of course such more 'open' printers are less subsidized by their future ink sales, so may cost $200+ instead of $60.

Famously Apple did the same thing with the Lightning cables. Enforcing their MFi royalty payment on consumable charger cables, by embedding a crypto chip into the plug, a chip with no other necessary purpose in a charger cable.

Good luck with your resetting. :)

I use brother laser printers and their printers used a photo sensor and copy counter to deactivate the printer. Black electrical tape disabled the photo sensor. To reactivate the printer after a certain copy count you had to put in a "new" toner cartridge. The cartridge had a gear on it that would move the first time it was used so that it could not activate an reset switch on the printer any longer. The gear position can be rest by removing one screw and resetting the gear to the original position. I have not had to buy toner in years because I had a number of "empty" cartridges that were still at least 1/3 full.
I assume you have already searched Google and YouTube for resetting procedures.

Yeah, I was just looking to find someone who had experience and wasn't trying to sell one of the solutions.
The solutions I've come across:
> Firmware re-programming of printer to ignore the sheet counter -- seems plausible enough, single fee for each printer affected
> Replacement of counter chip -- a slow leak of dollars
> Re-programming of counter chip -- haven't found a cheap one yet.

Or...

> Buy a new printer -- one that isn't working for the enemy.
