I was wondering if anyone has any good methods to approach items like safety wired fasteners on models and/or drawings

I can go one step further. In a 3D sketch make a spline for the safety wire per Tick's recommendation. Then make the 3D sketch a block and save it to your block library. If just needed on the drawing then make a 2D block for the same purpose.

My motto: Make it pretty and make it once.

How about just referencing a spec. You could write your own using info from a place like this: or you may be able to find an official spec with good graphics.

If you want the solid then sweep the cross section on the sketch.

fsincox,

What do you want to accomplish?

You need a model of a drilled bolt and castle nut. These must show up on your BOM so that you can order them.

I would have to think about the wire. It can easily be modeled with SolidWorks' routing feature and called up on your BOM. You would not be able to re-use the resulting part on another assembly. The next time around, you would have to model it again.

I call up items like threadlocker by inserting empty parts. This generates a BOM entry. You need a note to tell people to use the stuff. You can draw the locking wire on your drawing, as opposed to modeling it. This may be a better way to interface with your MRP/ERP.

I am still a fan of a note that reads:

Safety wire indicated fasteners using item X (wire) IAW Spec ZZZZ

Then creating some simple spec like the one I linked above.

That way you don't need to sketch it everytime in a drawing or create assembly specific twisted wire models through fastener heads.
