f) A change in position from that for which the welder has already qualified (e.g. a change from rolled to fixed or a
change from vertical to horizontal or vice versa). A welder who qualifies in the fixed position shall also be qualified
to perform rolled welds within the essential variables qualified. A welder who qualifies on a butt weld shall also be
qualified to make lap fillet welds within the essential variables qualified. A welder who successfully passes a butt
weld qualification test in the fixed position with the axis inclined 45° from horizontal shall be qualified to do butt
welds and lap fillet welds in all positions.

No. The 5G position covers only the flat, vertical, and overhead positions. The horizontal position is not tested in the 5G test as it is in the 6G test.

OK thanks for your clarıfıcatıon wıth regards to not beıng covered for the 2G posıtıon.
One further questıon; If a welder ıs qualıfıed on a fıxed pıpe ın the 5G posıtıon would he also be qualıfıed to weld ın the 6G posıtıon.

No, for reasons cited above: A change in position from that for which the welder has already qualified (e.g. a change from rolled to fixed or a change from vertical to horizontal or vice versa).

For this reason, amongst others, this is why welders should be multi-qualified. Yes, I know that most times that welders may be making welds in one position, e.g., horizontal for cross country pipelines. However, multi-qualifcation removes most of the problem that occur when welders make welds outside the single qualification restriction.

Let's not confuse API1104 with ASME or AWS D1.X welding codes/standards. API1104 does not have the positions identified in the same manner as AWS or ASME. Apples and oranges and pumpkins. They are not the same.

Best regards - Al
