Can anyone share the section in API 1104 that states that you have to have a PQR and a WPS for a legal welding procedure? Would a WPS and procedure test coupons be OK?

Inspector? Really?

Best regards - Al

I've read this but it doesn't specify a "PQR" and "WPS". What I am gathering is that you basically need a WPS with a test coupon report that proves the WPS. Sec IX on the other hand states both are required.... Do you see what I'm saying?

Under API you must have a wps to get a wps you have to do testing from a pqr......... ESTABLISHED AND QUALIFIED
5.1 PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION
Before production welding is started, a detailed procedure
specification shall be established and qualified to demonstrate
that welds with suitable mechanical properties (such as
strength, ductility, and hardness) and soundness can be made
by the procedure. The quality of the welds shall be determined
by destructive testing. These procedures shall be
adhered to except where a change is specifically authorized
by the company, as provided for in 5.4.

5.4.1 General
A welding procedure must be re-established as a new procedure
specification and must be completely requalified when
any of the essential variables listed in 5.4.2 are changed.
Changes other than those given in 5.4.2 may be made in the
procedure without the need for requalification, provided the
procedure specification is revised to show the changes.

All in all its up to the company from what i read.

The WPS, in any code, would have no standing, and cannot be defended without a coupon test report, or PQR that proves compliance to the specification.

That's what I'm talkin about Sec IX! So, again, WPS and a Coupon Test Report should be sufficient? Also, what welding procedure do weldolets fall under? Do I need a WPS for 1/2" - 2 3/8" branch connections just for them or would they go under the procedure for the pipe they are actually going on?

(Q) "So, again, WPS and a Coupon Test Report should be sufficient?"

(A) Yes; provided each each was properly performed, documented and met all API 1104 and Company specific requirements.

(Q) "Also, what welding procedure do weldolets fall under? Do I need a WPS for 1/2" - 2 3/8" branch connections just for them or would they go under the procedure for the pipe they are actually going on."

(A) Weldoloets are covered under fillet procedures, so you could not use a girth weld procedure for fillets. OD is not an essential variable, so you could, in theory, use an NPS 12 x 12 welder qualification test(as mentioned in another post) and write a WPS indicating the appropriate header and branch group range. If successful, this qualified the welder and welding procedure.

SJONES,

Depends on whether it is set-on, or set-in. In general, tho, 1104 recognises these as fillets.

Thanks SectionIX but the olets that we use here are full penetration welds. They are 'set-on' the pipe, required to have a gap and SHALL completely penetrate the weld... I'll look into the fillet weld requiremens though for 1104.

SectionIX,
Please advise where API 1104 allows fillet welding for set on or set in branches onto a carrier pipe ?
Both should be full penetration groove welds.
Regards,
Kiwi

Kiwi,

Branch welds are shown in various locations in 1104.

From API 1104 3.2.2

branch weld: The completed groove and/or fillet
weld joining a set on or set in branch pipe or a set on or set in
branch fitting to a run pipe.

The 20th Edition states:

Branch Weld - The completed weld joining a branch pipe or branch fittings to a run of pipe.

Just FYI, it is a little different. What edition do you have SectionIX?

Hi GHF Inspector:

I'm using the 20th edition w/ ERRATA/ADDENDUM, JULY 2007; ERRATA 2, DECEMBER 2008; REAFFIRMED, APRIL 2010.

The description for this term shows new for the 2007 errata...

GHF Inspector, Kiwi: Glad to help.

GHF Inspector, et al,

API allows access to publications cited in government regulations such as 49 CFR parts 192 and 195 and can be accessed here:

You can't print or download these documents. Free to register, but access is somewhat slow...
