Hello all,

I am trying to get some welders at our plant certified up to API 1104 Standards. Around here, we do all types of welding, including SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW.

In Section 6.3.2 for Multiple Qualification, does this mean that a welder must qualify (by passing both tests) seperately for SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW?

Also, does he also have to qualify for each different type of filler rod? For example, in one SMAW process, we use E7010 (Group 1), while in another SMAW process, we use E7018 (Group 3).

If this is true, this would mean that each welder must take and pass the two multiple qualification tests a multiple of times in order to cover everything we do here. Isn't that redundant?

Thanks in advance,
Brent G.

Brent,

When performing weld performance qualifications any change in the essential variables of the welding process will result in requalification. Essential and supplementary essential variables are critical to the successful deposition of the weld quality and the overall metallurgical integrity. A change in the weld process requires requalification.

Regarding the filler metals, if this is considered to be an essential variable (which it should be)requalification would be required.

I would recommend you out ASME Section IX for specific details in performance qualification testing.

Dominick
