Hi!

For installation of a 24-inch SCH 40 API 5L Grade X42 fuel oil pipeline, anyone know what the maximum degree of bending that can be field accomplished without damaging the piping?

Thanks for your help!

Typical values for bend radii in the ASME codes that I remember from my time as a pipeline engineer are :

Elastic bends: 50 x pipe diameter
Plastic bends: formed with a pipe bender with an internal mandrel: 15 x pipe diameter

DrillerNic,

Thanks for answering. Would the 50 x pipe diameter bend radii change for different grades of pipe? Or would this be considered a safe value that can be accomplished in the field?

As far as I remember, the minimum elastic bend radius is 50D regardless of the pipe grade, but this is from a 7 year old copy of ASME B31.8 ...!
