API 5L mass per unit length

I have access to API 5L 46th edition, section 9.11.2 mentioned the calculation for mass per unit length to be: mass for 1m=Wall thickness x (I.D.) x 0.02466. but the results of this formula is lighter than calculating the weight by density (considering the density to be 7850 k/m3).
what is the reason for this difference?
