I'm new to this and I'm getting involved with Fire Testing some butterfly valves and have a point of clarification that hopefully someone with more experience could guide me. We will be testing Ferritic (CS) butterfly valves and need some guidance as to the coverage this provides.

Reading Section 7.2 of API607 of the standard covers Qualification of other valve materials.

Specifically 7.2.1 States “ For the purposes of product compliance certification or type testing systems, the materials of the pressure retaining envelope of the valve shall be deemed to qualify other materials of construction within the generic classifications below” :

• Ferritic

• Austenitic

• Duplex

Section 7.2.2 goes on to further elaborate on this by stating “ if a range of valves is covered by testing of ferritic test valves then the type testing coverage may be extended to cover austenitic or duplex materials by carrying out a further test on a mid-range size of valve of the same design in that material”. Does this mean that to give coverage of Austenitic or Duplex valves that we are required to burn a mid range size of that perticular material either Austenitic or Duplex, or does it mean a mid range size in Carbon

Would be grateful if someone could give me some guidance.

Thanks in advance.

I interpret it to mean 'burn austenetic to get austenetic; burn duplex to get duplex'. YMMV
