Hello everyone,
There is a double wall containment tank (butane storage) that has an 8” nozzle on the bottom of the tank for withdrawal. The internal temperature of the tanks contents is measured with an RTD downstream of a block valve on the line connected to this nozzle. Since it is downstream of the block valve, it is reading the temperature of the tank contents most accurately when product is being transferred out of the tank. My question is what other options are there to install instrumentation to better monitor the tank’s internal temperature? Can thermowells be installed through the two tank shell walls without experiencing fatigue/deformation when the tank is thermally expanding/contracting on start up, shut down, temperature changes throughout the day? The 8” bottom nozzle is jacketed as well so the same concern applies there. What are the systems typically used to monitor the internal tanks temperature?

Thanks for your help I have included some more information on the tank below.

capacity:250,000 bbl, Butane Storage
Inner Tank Diameter: 165’-6’’ Outer Tank Diameter: 170’-6”
Design Pressure Inner Tank: 2 psig internal, 2 in w.c. external
Design Pressure Outer Tank: 2 in w.c. Internal, 2 in w.c. External
Design Temp: -50F
