API 650 Section 8.1 Method of examining joint

Dear experts,

In my understanding this section is intended as a guide how to RT a storage tank or tanks. This mean if we have many tanks even close each other in one project the method of RT is the same. Method of RT meaning how many film to be taken.

Nothing has to do with welder performance.

Any comments ?

Hi,

Section-8 is for Method of Examining Joints and explains about RT, UT, MP, LP, Visual, Vacuum.
Method of RT is same for all Tanks. There are other tests in case if RT is not possible.
The quality of the Radiography film speaks about the Welder's performance.
You may refer to 8.1.2.5 / 8.1.2.6 / 8.1.6.

Does this answer your question:

8.1.2.4 The number of spot radiographs required herein shall be applicable on a per tank basis, irrespective of the number of tanks being erected concurrently or continuously at any location.

In other words you have to RT every tank even if they are the same size, close together, welded by the same person, etc.

Let us say welder A has completed vertical on outside part and he can't continue on inside part. We assign welder B to weld the vertical from inside. Does API 650 has restriction on this case ?

Each welder needs to be tested.

8.1.2.2 includes the following:

...one spot radiograph shall be taken in the first 3 m (10 ft) of completed vertical joint of each type and thickness welded by each welder or welding operator.

Thereafter, without regard to the number of welders or welding operators, one additional spot...

If there is no vertical available but there is horizontal can we ask the new welder to weld the horizontal?

Horizontal joints are treated differently in API 650. See section 8.1.2.3

I have a question about 8.1.2.2
in this paragraph, we shall take one radiograph spot in the first 3m and if welder or thickness was the same, each 30 m vertical joint we take another spot. Am I right???
