Hi. Is there a difference between clean washed sand and oiled sand when used as tank based? Because as per API 650, a minimum of 75mm thick clean washed sand is recommended as tank sand base. But existing client's design uses 50mm thick oiled sand. Thanks.

Yes, oiled sand is much better. It holds its shape and prevents corrosion better than plain sand. But alas and alack, those pesky environmental regulations get in the way. So every one uses clean washed sand now.

Hello JedClampett. Thanks for your comment. Is there any technical reference about this? Or any difference in properties? I wish to proove that oiled sand can be used better than what API 650 recommends.

We generally used crushed chippings - 3/8" - as they are angular, they hold tighter.

Could someone talk more about oiled sand? Is that in a certain locality? Is it like hot mix asphalt? I've never even heard of it.

We used oiled sand for tank foundations in Texas and Louisiana but that was back in the '80s. This was for chemical processing plants. Local permitting was mainly for the fees.
