API 650 titanium gr2 tank

Hello everyone,

I need to design a tank made of TiG2 ,
The tank’s dimensions are a diameter of 1.2m and a height of 9m. The design pressure is hydrostatic, and the design temperature is 90 degrees Celsius. The tank has a flat bottom resting on concrete.

Intuitively, I considered using the API 650 standard. However, upon review, I found that titanium Grade 2 is not included in this standard, meaning it does not cover this material.

I would like to know if it is possible to use the existing formulas for calculating the bottom thickness from Annex AL (which pertains to tanks made of aluminum but apply the values from ASME Section II, Part D.

if it is not ,I would appreciate guidance on how to perform this calculation according to ASME Section III, Division 1.

That's more like a large diameter pipe.

API 650 isn't really designed for such small very tall "tanks"

You might be better off with one of the other tank codes like silos or similar.

Your approach is reasonable. API 650 scope covers basically storage of petroleum and petroleum products, . however can be used for storage of other liquid products. My interpretation for your case, API 650 dose not explicitly state all of the non ferrous metals other than Aluminium and stainless steel . IMO, the use of titanium for construction material of storage tank will not be economical. AFAIK, the approximate cost of titanium is forty times of CS and twenty times of AL.
I would search other economical solutions such as SS , Al which could be suitable for the liquid content.

Or ask a few vendors. Many tanks are not actually designed to any specific code believe it or not.

A lot depends on contents, design pressure, location and similar.

But API 650 may give you what you need, but it may come out with some minimum thicknesses as it is not really used for such a small diameter vessel

It’s possible that indeed switching to a different code will solve the issue.
