After reviewing the API 682 3rd., in particular A.1.4. I am still confuse on when to select Category 2 and 3. Both categories can be used for the same temperature and pressure range.

Is there any good and "current" literature, i.e. handbooks, customer specs. (Shell, BP, etc.) where I could find information with further details on category selection?

My application target is for API 610. This is the reason for asking about category 2 and 3. Since I believe category 1 seals are no intended to fit in API 610 pumps, correct? As per API 682, item 6.1.2.4.

I know some of you guys would like to recommend to contact vendors. However, we would like to build-up some in house "theoretical" knowledge before asking the right questions to vendors.

Best regards,

This is not as straight forward as you may think. Catogory 1 seals do fit into ANSI pumps but can be adopted to fit into API pumps too. for example, if you make a gland plate to API standards and make a sleeve to meet the API requirements and use the components of a Catogery 1 seal then it can be fitted to an API pump. Generally these seals are less expensive than Cat 2 & 3 but may not be the best selection.
The selection criteria is dependant on the application. You really need to understand seals better and perhaps attend a seal training course whereby you can learn more specific to your site. If you have a specific application that you are currently looking into then send us the details. If this is a general question then it may be a little difficult. We cannot issue Specs to anyone that come from reputable companies as you can appreciate.

we will try to help as much as possible.
