Dear all,
We are going to buy forgings that needs to fulfill API 6HT.
Chapter 6.3.1.3 states:
Furnace Loading Practices
""Allow sufficient space between parts when loading a furnace to insure that all surfaces of the parts are evenly heated and to insure a good, even quench. Do not stack or bundle parts. Fixtures may be required.
Parts should not be placed directly on the furnace hearth (floor)—use a metal tray or fixture that allows the furnace atmosphere to circulate around and under the part. The refractory on the furnace floor is a large heat sink that may result in uneven heating of the part.
Support long parts as needed to prevent sagging during heat treating: sagging may occur especially during the austenitizing cycle.
Consider using heat treating fixtures for parts with complex geometries to prevent distortion during heat treating.

How shall this be interpreted?
The forage master that we will use claims/ insist that use of spacer between the metal parts are OK.
Is the term Fixtures means spacers or does it imply some kind of tray, ie so the metal part in the bottom don’t take any load from the top ones?
