I am currently designing a pig launcher for a customer. It is a 16 to 12 inch pig launcher, and i selected API 5L Grade X-52 SMLS Pipe for both the 16" and 12" line. My problem I am having is the flanges that are attached at the various locations on the pig launcher are of ANSI Specs. The differences between the API Pipe and ANSI Pipe Nominal is creating small differences between the two. Is it acceptable to use ANSI fittings with API pipe?

Thanks!

on the basis that there are no other flange specs to use yes. What you need to do is choose the flange material so that is of equal strength to the pipe which then permits the ID of the flange to be bored to the same ID as your pipe. Normally this is A694 grade FYY, where the YY is the same as the API grade 5L X-YY.

All other flanges for nozzles not part of the connecting flange can be more normal material.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
