API Tutorial?

I've found a couple of good API references, but nothing that really gives a basic intro to using the API. Anyone aware of anything like this?

I've got enough repetitive processes that at this stage, I think learning the API and programming these steps would be about the same amount of time as just doing them all manually (for this job), but learning the API will probably pay off in the future.
