For buried sour gas pipeline material selection, I was using NACE MR0175, which allows the use of SS 304, with some restrictions. However, I was told that that this Standards is only for refinery/plant piping(above ground), and that another NACE standard is written specifically for buried pipelines, and according to that standard, stainless steel would not be allowed for sour gas pipelines(NACE Region 3). Can someone please confirm if this is true, and if so, what is the applicable standard for buried sour gas pipelines? Thanks.

If you have the actual documents, look at Table 1 in Part 3 (or part 2 if you wish). It clearly states the classification of pipelines to which it is applicable. There is no distinction between buried and above ground (why should there be when the H2S is on the inside?) NACE MR0103 is for refineries and downstream plants.
