Applicable standards for sidewalk gratings over a transformer vault.

Does anyone know the applicable standards for sidewalk gratings over a municipal utility transformer vault? The gratings were installed in 1965. In particular I would be interested in any standards in effect in 1965 as pertains to the co-efficient of friction of the grating and the recommended direction of the bearing bars in relation to the primary direction of travel.
