is this possible? I don't need this for drawing callouts, but would like it for mass properties.

there is a slick tool in solid edge to do something like this.

You might want to ask this question in forum562 for a better response.

In the graphics area, group select all the parts to be changed, and then while holding down the Ctrl button, RMB in the graphics area and select Material > Edit Material and choose from the list.

The FM can also be used to select the parts, but cannot include sub-assys. It can include parts within the sub-assys though. Selecting from the graphics area ignores the sub-assys, but selects their components.

CorBlimey,

Can you explain a little better where "material" is located? RMB?

Mango,

Thanks for the help, but i am in fact asking about solidworks. I have some previous experience with solidedge, which i didn't like very much but recognize its strength and that tool was one of them.

RMB = Right Mouse Button

There may be a specific tool buried somewhere in SW, but if there is I don't know about it. The above method is the only way I know to change materials en masse.

A macro for this could probably be developed to eliminate the need for graphical selection.

[cheers]

Arlenn, sorry, you mentioned SolidEdge, so I thought you might have had the wrong forum.

Go into Tools>Options>System Options and in FeatureManager "tab" make sure that Material is being shown in the drop-down menu. Make sure all your Lightweight parts are Resolved. Material Properties for your parts should be visible in your Feature Manager (FM) tree, as an icon that looks like a stop light, but with red/blue/green lights with horizontal lines by each.

I don't think there is a way to Ctrl-select various parts in the FM and do a global material change, you will have to change each individual part. With the top assembly open, click a part, click the Edit Part icon and after the part details in the FM are highlighted blue (default color) you can select the Edit Material option.
