Hello,
Short question, is there any way to run a "Design Study" on a "Pressure Vessel Study" in Solidworks Simulation?
Long question, this might be tough to explain, please bear with me:
I'm performing an ASME VIII-2 fatigue analysis for an ASME VIII-1 pressure vessel operating in cyclic service.
My operating temperatures/pressures are all over the place, so I'm going to make up a sample case with different conditions to describe my question.
Starting conditions: say 100 psi @ 100°F
Cyclic conditions: At some time, the pressure rapidly increases to 200 psi while simultaneously the temperature rapidly increases to 200°F developing through-thickness temperature profiles.
Here is how I would have liked to perform the analysis:
1) Perform a static stress analysis at 100 psi, 100°F
2) Perform a starting-point thermal analysis at 100°F
3) Perform a transient thermal analysis to model the rapid temperature increase to 200°F
4) Create a static study implementing the 200 psi and transient thermal model.
5) Create a pressure vessel study using a linear combination method.
6) Create a design study that applies the transient thermal model to the static study in step 4, then each static case to the pressure vessel study in step 5. If I pick my contraint locations properly, I would then be able to determine at which point in time the combination of pressure increase and through-thickness thermal profile generates the highest effective alternating stress.
I can do every step except for step 6. I can't seem to make the software run a design study on a pressure vessel study. Otherwise I would have to manually step through the pressure vessel study at each time step, which can take a while on large models. (I'd prefer to set it all up during the day and hit run when I go home for the night).
Any ideas?
