im very new to ABAQUS and having difficulty modelling loads on a crankshaft...

the crankshaft is very simple, off a single cylinder engine, and so only has one crankpin.
im trying to apply a torque to the crankpin, and hold the crankshaft at the end (where the flywheel would be) with an inertia, so there is some resistance to the torque.

i have looked online for relative tutorials but have found very little which can help as most of them use tecnical terms and i am very new to ABAQUS!

any help would be fantastic..

I suppose you wanna apply a torque on one end-surface of the crank. Create a RIGID SURFACE here, with normal parallell to the centre axis, use *Tie to connect the end-surface to the RIGID SURFACE, the RIGID SURFACE must allways be the master!. Apply the torque to the reference point of the RIGID SURFACE. The reference point has 6 DOFs, 3 transl. and 3 rotas. No boundary conditions of the remaning 5 DOFs are nessesscary if the crank is free to rotate only.

thanks for your help,

but really im having trouble making the crankshaft spin around the correct axis. i can use a force on the crankpin, but i dont know how to hold the crankshaft as a bearing would, and apply inertia to the free end...

ive tried to draw a simple diagram of what i mean which is attached.

Restrain the bearing position radially and apply your force to the pin. It looks like the key-hole slots in the shaft are restrained on the flats, to give you the torque.

how do i restrain the bearing position radially? is it a boundary condition or a constraint?

sorry, i am very new to ABAQUS!

Apply a cylindrical co-ordinate system to that surface and restrain the UX direction.
