approaching an inventor

Hi,

I just got employed RnD Chemical Engineer. I need to find new products and justify why investors should accept my proposal.

How should I approach an inventor that has a patent we might need to buy?

Also any ideas about what product I should research are welcomed. We ha a pilot line that was last used for hydrogenation but we are not in the petroleum industry.
