Many localities specify that only backflow preventers approved by the USC backflow foundation can be installed. However, despite diligent web searching, I am unable to find a recent edition of this list. The USC backflow foundation website states that it is not available to the general public--or, it seems--to anyone who isn't a member. The question I'm trying to answer is whether a specific "reduced pressure zone" BFP can be installed in a "vertical up" orientation. This information is on the USC list (i.e. they have actually tested the device in that orientation), and a manufacturer's assertion as to vertical installation will not meet the requirement. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you go to the ASSE website ( and go to the listings page, go to the "search product listings", type in the ASSE standard for the type of backflow you are looking at - it will give you a list of the products that comply with the dates, etc.

Thanks bimr and PEDARRIN2--it's helpful information.
