AR 400 ALTERNATIVE 1

We are in the process of replacing a horizontal drag chain conveyor handling (wet/damp) coal. Presently lined with AR400 plate 3/8 thick. Ambient outdoor temperature. Anyone have any alternate suggetions in liew of this material? Any known stainless alloys that would survive this application. The present material is lasting approx 3 years.

500 BNH plate will provide longer wear than AR400 but no corrosion benifits.

Out side the box thinking you could use a PH stainless steel plate that has the surface ion nitrided. I have done this on small parts and get hardness up to HRc 65 and no loss in corrosion resistance. 17-4 or 15-5PH sst would have better atmospheric corrosion resistance than AR400

I would stick with the AR400 abrasion resistant plate. You need to evaluate fabrication/installation and cost, as well as durability. I have familiar with this in our coal handling facilities and AR400 is the way to go when you look at all options.

A popular material in bulk materials handling in such situations is the corrosion resisting steel 1.4003 (originally known by a trade name 3CR12). In most of it's applications it's corrosion resistance more than compensates for it's lack of hardness as compared with the abrasion resistant quenched and tempered low alloy steels.

There used to be something called HyFlo 420 from British Steel in the UK which attempted to combine corrosion resistance and hardness, particularly aimed at the bulk materials market. My memory is that when production was moved from the UK to the continent the quality of the product deteriorated and it's production was abandoned. The last sheet I saw was anything but flat, but it was a case of "take it or leave it"!

How about high manganese steel plates? Drag chain links are cast high manganese steels too! Issue remains about initial low hardness of the plate and its easy availability.

Thanks for the suggestions. Our customer has elected to stay with the same general construction they have with the AR400 plate when comparing costs and unknows. Very useful forum, thanks
