Archs.shx errors

I've found quite a bit of info on errors regarding older .shx files, but haven't found anything that quite covers this.

One of our clients had archs.shx as their standard font, we're forced to use it. Running Acad 08, all patches, etc.

On one machine, %%C shows up as a question mark, but on another, it shows up as the diameter symbol. (Same font file, same drawing)

On the machine that it shows as a question mark, if a new drawing is built from the standard template, and a style created that uses that font, it shows up correctly. Until the drawing is saved and re-opened, then it converts to a question mark.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Assuming same OS, machine build etc, etc, It sounds as though either the font file is corrupt, or the AutoCAD install has gone south. Try copying the font file from your working machine to machine having trouble.

Other thing to check is AutoCAD settings themselves, they may have different settings causing this? - just a guess on this one as I'm not aware of any setting affecting text this way...

This happens to me sometime. I use ACLT but they use the same support files IIRC. My problem seems to be the network drive where my special font files does not reconnect when I reboot so ACAD can't find the file. You could try to move the font file location up in the search path. I would also suggest that you compare the search path from the machine that works to the one that is having the problem
