Hi guys. Does anybody know if the Group Numbers in B16.5 are equivalent to Section IX P-numbers? I don't have a copy of Section IX. Thanks!

When you say group numbers, are you referring to the Material Group numbers as listed in Table 1A of B16.5?

If so, then no, they are not the same.

Hi DVWE,

Thanks for the reply. Yes that's what I'm asking.

If they're not the same, how then does a guy ensure he is matching up equivalent metallurgies when welding or when assembling a piping design specification for a particular fluid service? Do you have to go back to the base ASTM specs and look at all the compositions and calculate the carbon equivalents, etc.?

That is the whole purpose of ASME P-numbers, they are categorized by similar metallurgy and weldability characteristics. You need to get a copy of Section IX and review QW-200.3 and Table QW-422.

From the P-number, you could go further to the ASTM/ASME spec and review the detailed chemical compositions and calculate carbon equivalents from the Material Test Report of the component or pipe material.

I should clarify a little more that the materials listed in Table 1A of B16.5 can be found in Section IX, Table QW-422 for the corresponding ASME P-number.

Excellent. Very helpful and thank you very much. Pete
