area of a spline in AutoCad

when i draw a spline in autocad, an area comes up in the properties window....does anyone know what this area refers to?

From a quick bit of experimentation it appears that the area is the net area of the regions created by drawing a line between the endpoints of the spline (regions on opposite sides have oppositely signed areas).
