ASCE 7

Hi,
I am looking for design load infos out of interest in structural engineering. ASCE 7 keeps being mentioned anywhere I look. I don't want to spend the 100+ $$ to buy the actual spec. but would like to find out what is in the spec. Is there an older version (less expensive) available or may be a paper bound summary book (Cliff Notes)?

You can't use older versions and comply with building code requirements. You need to use the version that is referenced in your applicable building code at the time....that keeps you within your "standard of care" for your engineering practice.

Unfortunately, you will have to spend the money if you want to used the document. It's a cost of doing business.

You might also find that your code will allow the use of its own provisions rather than going to ASCE 7. Keep in mind, though, that the primary code provisions might be limited...for instance, the primary code might only be applicable to buildings under 60 feet in height.

The California Building Code (Vol. 2) has much of the same information as ASCE 7 and is free to download, since it is a government document.

If you take some time searching on the internet, you can get about 70% of the chapters as pdf's. Mostly from different colleges. That is what I did when I was studying for the PE.
