I've always been confused on WHEN I need to follow 62. I'm working on some very minor alterations to an office space. A few new conference rooms, and moving a different use group into an existing occupied space (about 100 people move out and another 100 move back in).

Do i need to comply with 62 for this? We are making VERY small changes to the mechanical system.

Your small changes in the mechanical system dictates that you cant do much change in the ventilation also.

If your previous design was complying Ashrae 62.1, and you have the record for that also (in the form of calculations) you can update that to see wheather the new arrangement also complies or not.

The correct time to follow the guidlines of Ashrae 62.1 is in the design stage. Now you have modified the design, atleast at this stage you can check wheather you can comply with 62.1 or not.

It is a good idea to comply as much as it is feasible.

Forget the standard for a second, and think of your justifications.
Q: Do you have a defensible position for not meeting the current standard?
A: Yes, it is an existing system.

If the code official were 62.1 savvy, how would you answer this Q: Is the existing system capable of being rebalanced to meet the current standard for the reworked areas?
A: ??
