Although ASHRAE is a "not for profit organization". the only way you can obtain their material is to by it or copy it at the library; which is "illegal" (copying). So if you're an "ethical" guy, you fork over the big bucks!
I've been meaning to ask ASHRAE about their "desire t advance the art and science of HVAC for the good of mankind" in this "downsized corporate environment" we engineers find ourselves in!

Perhaps someone at the ASHRAE forum can defend this practice? Think I'll post this message there and see what discussion ensures! :) Buddha's advice 2,500 yrs ago (I'm Christian!!???!!): "After deep, careful observation/analysis; and it agrees with reason, is conducive to the common good: accept it and live up to it."

Yes it seems most standards by not for profits are only obtained at an obscene cost. You have to believe they are making a nice profit. Granted they have meetings, etc to derive these standards but they consist mostly of companies in that particular market who can benfit from having some say in the standards and can certainly afford the expenses of attending these meetings. With the high cost of standards, it discourages start-up companies because the guy designing some wizz bang product can't afford to purchase all the necessary standards(assuming he has not obtained financing).
I think it is alright to charge for these but jeez some of them are ridiculously high and seem to reflect on the importance of the standard, the more important ones cost more.
