ASME AND ASTM FOR 304 STAINLESS

I am in the process of obtaining some 304 stainless for weld certification samples. We call out ASME SA240 304 STAINLESS on our Weld Procedure Specification. The stainless I received a quote on was listed as ASTM A276, ASTM A479, & QQS-763. Does this mean that I need to obtain different materials? Are these standards in the same ballpark?

Per Section IX, for welder qualification, any P-No or S-No base material will suffice. This means for 304 stainless steel, your ASTM designation A 276 falls under S-No 8, and would be accceptable, per QW-423.1. The other designation A 479 is not listed as an S-No in Table QW-422.


For weld procedure qualification, you can use an S-No base material designation but the procedure can only be used for S-No base metal applications, not for P-No base metals.
