ASME B31.3 Examination for Leaks

First time post here.

I was wondering if anyone could provide direction. ASME B31.3 Para 345.2.2a states that "A leak test shall be maintained for 10 minutes....and all joints...be examined for leaks."

Question: Where is "examining for leaks" defined? If I have a 1/2" thick girth seam, what is required and what is practical in terms of examining for leaks? We have historically snooped everything during pneumatic tests, but am questioning the status quo.

Any input you can give me is appreciated.

You run your hands over the weld and feel for the hydro fluid leaking out. This seems to be the reason for the 10-minute hold tome; to allow plenty of leakage from very small defects.

Is your question specific to pneumatic tests?
