Dear all,

In chapter VII of ASME B31.3 it is clearly written that methods of stress analysis are less well defined for nonmetals compared to metals, because stress-strain behaviour of most nonmetals is different.

I need to perform Pipe Stress Analysis for PVDF and PP which are thermoplastic materials. Should I go to ASME NM. codes?

This is a weird situation because I have seen Pipe Stress Calculations made by Professional Engineer that use ASME B31.3 to compute stresses in the pipe for Thermoplastics, but they have used equations that are drawn from the metals chapter.
In particular they used (23a) from paragraph "320.2 Stress Due to Sustained Loads" in the METALS chapter. Can they do this?

Obviously nobody notices this, and in a way it's compliant to client requirements because client spec. generally mentions ASME B31.3 for piping stress... but everything is Thermoplastic.

Thank you
