Customer wants to put a slot on a 50" long 3/4" SCH40 pipe that is about 30" long and .25" diameter. I told them that this will take away its B31.3 compliance, but now they need proof in the book. Will slotting the pipe take away code compliance? How can I prove this? The design pressure and temp is atmospheric and ambient temperature, thankfully.

If I prove there is enough reinforcement for the opening, is that enough?

If it won't hold pressure....

why does a piping code matter?

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

As per SnTMans response

300.1.3 Exclusions. This Code excludes the
following:

(a) piping systems designed for internal gage pressures
at or above zero but less than 105 kPa (15 psi),
provided the fluid handled is nonflammable, nontoxic,
and not damaging to human tissues as defined in 300.2,
and its design temperature is from −29°C (−20°F)
through 186°C (366°F)

I slot that long does is not a pipe and does not hold pressure. You now have a C shaped structural member. Use structural design to see if can hold up itself and attached equipment.
