If my WPS is qualified for 3/16" to 8" base metal thickness, can I do a repair weld on a base metal that's 14" thick? As long as I stay within the 8" limit?
Or do I need a different WPS which would have 14" within the range?

You are limited to 8" Base Metal thickness with your current WPS.

Read QW-202.2(b) which allows you to weld unlimited Base Metal thickness with the qualification of a partial penetration groove weld.

Your existing PQR/WPS may cover you for a repair on thicker material.
Review QW 202.3.
