ASME Bolt Loads to Torque

Hello All,

My question relates to ASME Section 8 Division 1 Appendix 2 and ASME PCC-1. I'm trying to calculate bolt torque for engineered flanges only and basing my calculations on Appendix 2 to find bolt load, then finding the actual torque value from PCC-1.

After finding bolt loads for both gasket seating conditions and operating conditions (and checking flange stresses)- would I add these two loads together and attempt a Torque calculation? Or- would I take the higher of the two and do the torque calc?

Also, other technical references on this matter are nice to read if you have them.

-Thanks!!
Mathew

Do NOT use the bolt load values from Appendix 2 for your actual assembly. Please read Appendix S, as well as the text of PCC-1. This has been discussed on eng-tips multiple times. Please search for other posts on the topic of actual assembly bolt loads vs. design bolt loads.
