HI!

Does anyone frequently analyze welds using shell elements based on ASME BPVC ANNEX 5, FIG 5-A.10? I'm having a nightmare with 3D elements and decided to take the 2D approach based on ASME VIII Div 2 Table 5-A.2.

I use shell elements all of the time for the Structural Stress Method. You're probably overthinking this. Use the normal stresses (membrane and bending) straight from the shell results as your inputs to the SSM calculations.
 
@TGS4, thank you. I have seen very few papers with Shell elements for welds. I'm only a few months in to my FEA work experience and could not find a lot of information on this.
