Hello All,

Can somebody help me find the correct answer for my question.

What is the correct method for the use of welding symbols on drawing for ASME VIII div 1? Is this AWS D1.1?

Hoe about the size of fillet welds; is it standard to mention leg of throat?

I have seen some ASME design equipment on drawing were the fillet weld size is mentioned with "a" height! Is this correct?

Can somebody help me withthis one?
Thanks in advance,

1-AWS symbols are accepted
2-leg or throat: both
3- a, b, or c or w or z can be coded m, you are missing the information somehow in another page of the dwg, it shall be there.

If you are working with American fabricators, use AWS welding and NDT symbols. The applicable standard is AWS A2.4. AWS uses the leg dimension to size the fillet weld. If the ASME calculations result in the throat dimension, the designer has to convert the dimension to the equivalent leg dimension.

If you are working with a foreign manufacturer, you can use ISO welding symbols. With the ISO welding symbols, either the throat or the leg dimension can be used. The following link may be helpful:

Applicable standard is AWS A2.4 and for fillet weld it uses the leg dimension. Also on fabrication drawings leg size is given. But ASME code calculations are on throat size and from throat size, leg size can easily be calculated.
