Subject:
Chemical Requirements - SA 210
Question:

Under ASME II SA-210 Chemical Composition; 8.1 Steel shall conform to requirements as perscribed in Table 1. We have Mill Certificates for SA 210 that list varing amounts of Cu. What max. amounts are acceptable and still within Spec? Please explain what Section 8.2 refers to; " When a grade is ordered under this specification, supplying an alloy grade that specifically requires the addition of any element other than those listed for the ordered grade is not permitted." With this in mind, would a value of .33% Cu be allowable for SA 210A-1? What would be the Max. allowable?

Alloy grades that specifically require the addition of other elements does not apply to residual elements that simply result from the steel melting process. Cu can be a residual element, but if it was added specifically to another grade of alloy steel by the manufacturer, that alloy steel grade may not be reassigned by the manufacturer or a supplier as A-210 even though all other elements are within the range of Table 1.

Cu content in steels has steadily risen over the years and I have seen it near .33%.
