Hi,

I am working on a flange design using asme iii appendix xi.
In order to calculate the required bolt torque I have assumed that the largest of either wm1 or wm2 gives the force value to use in the torque calculation?

The calculations are based on an existing flange design so the bolt size and quantity are given.

Therefore I think I don't need to calculate W?

Thanks in advance.

Please go back and reread mandatory Appendix XI a bit more carefully, especially Section 3221 and 3223. I did not reach the same conclusion that you did.
