Is there a difference in the calculation of heat input for overlay welding and butt welding.

I have seen calculation of heat input for overlay welding to be:

Average Amps= [(Peak A * Peak Time)+(Background A * Background Time)]/[(Peak Time + Background Time]

Torch Heat Input = [Ave Amps*(Peak V+Background V)/2)* 60]/travel speed]

Wire Heat Input = [Wire A * Wire V * 60]/travel speed

The torch heat input and the wire heat input are then combined (added).

I have been unable to find this formulation in any reference material. Any help is appreciated.

KimberleyS;
For heat input calculations related to welding, you have several methods. If you are qualifying ASME Section IX welding procedures, I would suggest you use the formula in QW-409.1

heat input = V*A*60/travel speed

you can also "qualitatively" evaluate heat input by comparing volume of weld metal deposited. It all comes down to energy/unit length.
