Hi All

Regarding ASME IX is it possible to split a multi process PQR, i.e GTAW (Root & Hot Pass) & SMAW (Cap & Fill)? Thus enabling the GTAW process to be used seperattly from the SMAW?

Thanks in advance

See the interpretation below:

Interpretation: IX-95-10
Subject: Section IX, QW-200.4, Combination of Welding Procedures
Date Issued: March 17, 1995
File: Question: May a single process WPS be qualified by a combination process PQR where no
essential variables for the process are changed?
Reply: Yes.

The key in the above interpretation is that no essential variables are changed.

Also keep in mind that by doing this you are limiting the thickness (2T)that each process can be used for independently and the SMAW process is resticted to with backing only.

REGRUMBLE,

I do not think the backing would be an issue as it is not an essential variable for Procedure Qualification of SMAW. It would however be an essential variable for the Welder Performance Qualification and should be concidered when writing the WPS and qualifying the welders. I may be wrong on this as I am working from memory and if I am please feel free to correct me.
