For welder qualification, vertical up and vertical down require seperate qualification in the 5G and 6G test positions.

maybe 3rd time will be the charm . . .
Welder Qual is a 'skill test'. 6G or 2G+5G just prove that the welder can weld in 'All Positions". The welder ALSO has to prove his ability to weld uphill or downhill. A successful uphill test qualifies for uphill [only], and a successful downhill test gives downhill [only]. Chicago Bridge & Iron used to test their tank welders using a large 6G coupon, and the welder had to weld one side up and one side down. After that, they were qualified in either direction of progression.

but what ASME IX:2013 says about this and where can I get down welding in this standard ?

QW-416 chart; which gives QW-405.3 for 'vertical progression'.

Duwe6 ,

thank you for your cooperation and help for you thinking.

Regarding welding both uphill and downhill on the same test coupon; I seem to remember an interpretation by the Section IX committee that said that practice is not acceptable. The coupon is either welded entirely with vertical uphill or vertical downhill progression. Separate test coupons are required if qualification for both uphill and downhill vertical progression is necessary.

@gtaw,

QW-405.4D gives a clear answer.
thanks for your response.

The applicable Tables QW-353, QW-355, QW-356 and QW-357 provide the essential variable QW-405.3 for progression.
