ASME Label Location

I saw a an ASME label with the U-stamp welded to the removable manway cover on an un-fired pressure vessel (not supplied by my company). It seems to me that the label should have been attached to the vessel head or shell, since the cover could be removed and placed on another vessel. If this labeling procedure is not correct, should I report it to the National Board?

It is entirely possible that the nameplate you are referring to is for the manway assembly and not the vessel itself.

I read the question and was looking in Section VIII to see. I didn't actually spot anything that said you couldn't put a name plate on a removable part, although it defies logic. But it does talk about labeling removable parts (and how it's not always needed) so it's possble, as the post above says, that this is a nameplate for the cover, and a separate nameplate is (or was) elsewhere on the vessel.

Look at the nameplate again,is it a "Part"? Review UG-119 in SecVIII also look at UG-116(h).

Suggest you obtain Data Report first as it may explain this in the remarks. If there are still concerns contact the vessel manufactuer.

No. This was definitely the ASME label for the vessel in the format required by the National Board and including the "U" stamp, serial number, year built, MAWP and temperature range, manufacturer. This was not a repair stamp or heat number, material certs. or anything like that. The cover was elliptical style, approximately 12" X 16", with gasket and double yokes. MAWP 100 psi.

I think this would fall under UG-119(e) which states in part Removal (of the nameplate) shall require the willful destruction of the nameplate, or its attachment system. Seems to me that a nameplate applied to a removable manway cover could be removed from the vessel without the willful destruction of the nameplate or its attachment system.

I wouldn't get too excited about calling in the National Board police. A quick discussion with your AI will most likely result in a relocation of the nameplate and the AI should be able to provide guidance on any necessary communication with the National Board and Jurisdiction.

Just to confirm, your description could apply to a 'Part', namely the cover or the manway assembly, however, it would say PART under the U stamp. If it applies to the vessel, I doubt the AI knows it was installed on the cover.
