I need some direction on this. The site that I work at has "several" much older, second hand PV's that are missing their nameplates. Some of these vessels have the original U1's on file while others appear to be missing. I need to know who I can contact to have the nameplates replaced. I assume that for the tanks where the U1 is also missing, that I am going to have a complete fit-for-service re-calc. and evaluation performed by an ASME code shop. Who do I contact to replace the nameplate on the vessels that I do have the original U1's?

Contact your Authority-Having-Jurisdiction. Typically, that will be the state Boiler & PV Board. The vessels you have U-1's for are possibilities for replacement nameplates. You will have to satisfy an Authorized Inspector that the vessel and U-1 match, and that there has been no modifications made on the vessel since the U-1 was signed.

Depending on your location, the undocumented vessels may be 'scrap'. If your AHJ allows an API-510 evaluation for 'rerating' an unknown vessel, you may still have 'scrap' for your purposes; This is caused by the shell & head material problem. The 510 Inspector is forced to use the lowest strength material that the vessel could be fabricated from.
EXAMPLE: Carbon steel shell & heads; calcs cannot be made using anything stronger than A-285 or A-36, even though it probably is SA-516 Gr. 50, 60, or 70. "Don't know" means that unless it was indeed A-36, your vessel will calc 'thin'. Then you get into RT and Joint Efficiency - you have no RT's in-hand, so your highest Joint Eff is now 70%. IF the AHJ will allow it, the seams can be RT'd or UT'd and these welds could possibly be given an Eff of 85% or 100%.
